Goals and Objectives

To create awareness among the people about diverse affect of climate change in Bangladesh. This also enables the affective people to cope with adverse situation and to take necessary measure to adopt with the situation

Brief description

The main purposes of the project are to produce a video documentary on diverse affect of climate change in three different areas in Bangladesh i.e. northern, middle and southern Bangladesh. And to create awareness among the people through broad casting by the different television channel, Video show will also be arranged in different rural areas to create awareness among the rural people.

Outputs

-Building awareness among the people about climate change.
- Developing a documentary entitled " On the 50 th birth-day the Planet for the next generation"

Brief Description

Bangladesh POUSH has been implementing a project Sustainable Conservation of Mangrove Forest and Marine Turtle through Community Participation in Moheshkhali Island under Cox’s Bazar district of Bangladesh

Project Name Implementation of Biodiversity Conservation Management Plan of St. Martin’s Island ECA under Coastal & Wetland Biodiversity Management (BGD/99/G31/CWBMP)

Goals and Objectives

The overall goal of the project is to establish and demonstrate an innovative system for management of ECAs in Bangladesh.

Brief description

The project is being implemented by the Department of Environment (DoE), Ministry of Environment & Forest in cooperation with five NGOs. The project is supporting DoE efforts to operationalize the Ecologically Critical Area (ECA) concept at two main sites: Cox’s Bazar (which includes three ECAs) within the country’s long and biodiversity-rich coastal zone and Hakaluki haor at one of the largest and most important of the country’s many inland freshwater wetlands.

Outputs

Brief description

Eleven non- formal primary education centres are operating with the financial assist from RICOH Co. Ltd. Japan for the children of the poorest family in the remote coastal area in Cox’s Bazar coastal district. In each centre is for 30 children. Student belongs to 6 to 12 years old. In addition with the normal elementary education visual educational materials like poster on different environmental message use for the students for better understanding of the environment. At present 330 children are studying in the school centre. The demand of this non formal education centre in the area has increased. Education centers are running well. Over the period of last two years a total of 150 children has completed grade one and now they are studying in grade two

Bangladesh POUSH has implemented community Mobilization for Biodiversity Conservation at Cox’s Bazar ECAS a Component of Coastal & Wetland Biodiversity Management Project in Cox’s Bazar. Ukhya, Ramu, Teknaf, Sonadia Island as Lead NGOs with Partner NGO. Department of Environment, Government of Bangladesh is implementing the project with financial support from GEF/UNDP.

To promote livelihood security of the poor coastal fishing communities and protection, conservation and management of coastal fisheries resources.

Brief description

Bangladesh POUSH, in coalition with Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) and Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS) is implementing a component of the project, Empowerment of Coastal Fishing Communities (BGD/97/017) in Cox’s Bazar, Moheshkhali, Ramu and Ukhiya Upazilas. The project is implemented by Department of Fisheries with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The project commenced on 1st January 2003 and is expected to complete in November 2005. The project engages a number of service providers from the NGOs to assist the project in achieving its objectives within the given framework of project concept, strategy and institutional arrangement.

Brief description

POUSH has completed three-year project on Afforestation and Nursery Development with the assistance of RICOH CO.LTD., Tokyo, Japan.

Outputs

About 80000 seedlings of different tree species were raised and planted on 60 acres of denuded land in 3 Upazila of Tangail & Sherpur districts, 100 community people benefited during the period of 2000 to 2002.

To increase the tree cover in homestead areas of the households and also to increase biomass production for the benefits of the rural people.

Brief description

As a part of awareness program POUSH distribute seedling among the local people free of cost to increase the tree cover in homestead areas of the households and also to increase biomass production for the benefits of the rural people. POUSH distributed 70,000 seedlings in 2001-2002 among the local people at the different project locations mentioned. Accordingly POUSH is being distributed on an average 5,000 seedling of different tree species among the local people yearly.

Brief description

Under this project a total of 240 local community based people were trained on protection and management of planted trees of coastal belt. Now 240 local people are engaged in protecting and managing the about 15 km. Of plantation (2000-2001) with Assistance of Asian Development Bank, Department of Forest Government of Bangladesh.

Brief description This two-year’s project has been successfully implemented by POUSH with the Financial assistance from JFGE, and in collaboration with Ramsar Center Japan in the year of 1999 and 2000. Over 2500 community people and 1000 children, 100 school teachers benefited.

Goals and Objectives

Brief description POUSH has established 30 non-formal primary school centres in 12 upazilas of Bangladesh for the children of the poorest of the poor. POUSH has implemented this with its own fund over the period of 3 years (1996-1998), benefiting over 2700 children.
Outputs

Seventy Primary Education Centres were established in different remote rural areas under 14 upazilas and operated for the poor children over the period of 1996 to 1998. Over 6300 poor Girls & boys benefited from this project all the students successfully completed 3 years primary courses (i.e. Class-III).

Goals and Objectives

To develop an inventory on water resources to help better understanding of the beels as well as the types and availability of other water resources in project villages

Brief description

Bangladesh POUSH was one of the three NGOs which participated in the implementation of Biological Protection of Coastal Embankment by involving local people sponsored by Bangladesh Water Development Board. POUSH implemented this Biological Protection of Coastal Embankment pilot project at Polder No. 66/1 under Cox’s Bazar Upazilas and at Polder No.69 under Moheshkhali Upazilas of Cox’s Bazar district during the year of 1992-1993.

Outputs

This programme was evaluated by consultants of BWDB, and in their final report it was nominated as a programme viable for replication. Several consultants from The World Bank and UNDP also visited the project site and were satisfied with the achievement of the project. The consultants also discussed elaborately with POUSH on development of participatory methods for biological protection of coastal embankments. This subsequently resulted in the formulation a methodology for replication in other parts of the country.

Goals and Objectives

To collect qualitative and quantitative data for developing information on selected environmental components that likely to be affected by the IFFD schemes.

Brief description

For the Social Forestry Programme of its own, Bangladesh POUSH operated 24 central nurseries at 21 project sites under 11 districts. There were 3 nurseries located in Cox’s Bazar, Ramu and Chakaria Upazilas of Cox’s Bazar district with the capacity of 1.5 lakh seedling raising capacity.

Outputs

POUSH Nursery Workers mainly Women got the training in Nursery raising technique by the Local Forest Department staffs. Every year on an average POUSH raised about 1.0 million seedlings of different tree species which were used for the following project components:-
1. Tree Plantation and Social Forestry programme of POUSH
2. Free distribution of seedlings among the local people
3. Free distribution of seedlings to School Children
4. Distribution of seedlings among local institutions.

Goals and Objectives

The purpose was to recovery degraded environment through participatory afforestation.

Brief description A major activity of POUSH is to encourage the planting of useful varieties of trees in homesteads, private fallow land, and common access lands through participatory forestry. This activity has been carried out in fourteen upazilas of different environmentally degraded areas of Bangladesh. Assistance to this project has been obtained from the World Food Programme. The focus is in tree planting as well as protection of natural habitats, wildlife, wetlands, promoting income generating activities for the landless poor people and social transformation through non-formal education.
Outputs

Over the past Twelve years (From 1990 to 2002) this program component has been implemented, POUSH has planted over two million trees in environmentally degraded areas. A total of 2200 acres of degraded land brought under plantation of different tree species by involving community people.
